Track & Field Olympic Trials Day 3

The big day arrived on Saturday as Olympic dreams were made and by the same token- crushed. The relaxed atmosphere amongst the athletes that was present during the qualifying rounds disappeared as one would expect it to with so much on the line in all of the finals. With the intensity ratcheted up I was able to sit back and enjoy the spectacle. One of the highlights included a spectacular women’s 100m hurdle final in which Canada's best known hurdler Perdita Felicien was disqualified for a false start and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep hit a hurdle leaving Jessica Zelinka to take the title. Another neat moment was when brothers Justyn and Ian Warner finished 1,2 in the men’s 100m final. This means that the brothers are London bound in track and field’s most prominent event.

One of my favorite moments however had to be the men’s 800 meter final. After a slower women’s race full of tactics and strategizing- the men went full out from the gun. With all the competitors vying for the lead into the last turn it was Geoff Harris who pulled away from the pack seemingly with ease to punch his ticket to his first Olympics.

Track & Field Olympic Trials Day 2

On day 2 of shooting the Olympic qualifiers I got a real feel for the different events and what to watch for in each. It was amazing to see how the physiques of athletes changed from event to event. The 100 meter runners were built so solidly that I wondered what it would be like to collide with one of them. I learned to be careful what you wish for because after finishing the semi-finals of the 100m, Phylicia George ran through the finish line and into the camera gallery nearly knocking me on my rear but saved me (and my camera) by bear hugging me before I hit the ground. The speed these athletes possess was incredible to witness from track level. As the distances get longer the athletes become more focused on lean muscle which is conducive to endurance and not necessarily explosive power.

I told Jacquie that I have the physique of an athlete who would likely compete in the 200 meter discipline. She examined the photos and sarcastically said that I might want to start doing some sit-ups...
